This group (known as “Little Catholics”) serves children between the ages of four and five. The children meet on Sunday mornings at Holy Family School. The program involves a child’s discovery of his/her own uniqueness and an understanding of God’s love for him/her. The curriculum for this level is developed through bible stories, hands-on activities and experiences of the teachers and helpers.

This division serves children in grades one through five. They meet every Sunday morning to study our Catholic faith by exploring such topics as Jesus Christ, the Sacraments, the commandments, the Bible, prayer, worship, and Christian service. For second grade students, preparations for the reception of First Penance and First Eucharist form part of their curriculum.

This division serves students in grades six through eight and prepares them for the reception of the sacrament of confirmation at the completion of their second year. One of the components of the program is Christian Service. The goal of the program is to teach our youth so they may believe in the God of love and mercy, Jesus Christ; to teach them so they may come to know that God’s love is accessible to them, and they in turn must bring this love to others. Toward the end of their second year, the students are mandated to attend a retreat in preparation for the sacrament of confirmation and must complete their service project before the scheduled date.

In order that no child is left behind, we have a supplemental sacrament preparation program for students in 3rd grade or older who have not received the sacraments of reconciliation and Eucharist or those that have not yet been baptized. This group goes through an adapted version of RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) proper to their various ages. This process normally takes between two and four years or more (depending on the child’s age), with students receiving the Sacraments of initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) as needed at the Easter of their final year.

Our staff is sensitive to the needs of special education students. Please contact Mr. Brendan Egonu, Director of Religious Education, at (718) 257-8016.

The RCIA describes a process in which men and women are guided and cared for as they awaken in faith and are gradually introduced to the Catholic way of life.

  • It is a series of carefully planned stages, marked by liturgical rites in the presence of the whole community.
  • It is a process of continuing and deepening conversion into faith and discipleship.
  • It is a process that takes the distinctive history and spiritual needs of each person into account.
  • It differentiates between the baptized and unbaptized, the catechized and uncatechized.

The goal of RCIA is to care for people in the midst of this life-changing experience.

Journey of faith is embarked upon individually. Therefore, conversion is a journey of Mind, Heart and Spirit. The first step for some is a sense that something is missing – a sense, perhaps provoked by some crisis, that there is more to life. For many others, the journey begins because of a relationship with a catholic-close friend or potential spouse. Still others are drawn by seeing the example of a catholic life well-lived like St. Teresa of Calcutta.

Whatever the reason, the process is the first step on a lifelong journey of intellectual, emotional and spiritual conversion. For some it is the completion of an initiation process that was interrupted in childhood. The RCIA recognizes both the ongoing quality and the communal nature of conversion. It provides an intellectual and spiritual framework and faith community in which an individual’s conversion experience can be understood and supported.

Protecting Our Youth

Letter from Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio:

In 2002, the Catholic Bishops of the United States met in Dallas, and approved the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People and pledged to address the issue of sexual abuse by clergy, lay employees and volunteers in the Catholic Church. The Charter includes guidelines for reconciliation, healing, accountability, and prevention of future acts of abuse. Since 2002, the Bishops have revised the Charter twice and will continue to make changes as necessary.

In order to implement the goals expressed in the Charter, the Safe Environment Program was opened in 2004. This program includes training to assist priests, deacons, pastoral ministers, employees and volunteers to be aware of any signs of sexual abuse with the children with whom they might come into contact, conducting background searches to reveal any past criminal activity that might endanger children entrusted to our care, and administering codes of pastoral conduct which serve as guidelines for pastoral activity. Protecting God’s Children is a tremendous responsibility that the Church has and must fulfill.

Of equal importance was the need to reach out to victims and their families who have been impacted by sexual abuse by clergy. For many years, the Diocese of Brooklyn has been offering assistance to those who have presented themselves to the Diocese as victims of sexual abuse by clergy through the Office of Victim Assistance. We are committed to helping anyone who was hurt as a minor by sexual abuse to seek help and to begin the healing process. Healing is a journey which can be taken in different steps. Circumstances for each victim are varied, but the commonality is that there is a need to feel that someone understands their pain, acknowledges the wrongdoing and offers an apology in the name of the Church.

We hope that through the links on this page, you will find valuable and useful information on the resources provided within the Diocese in Brooklyn and Queens to address the issue of sexual abuse by clergy, lay employees, and volunteers in the Catholic Church.

As Bishop of the Diocese of Brooklyn, my prayers continue for all the victims of sexual abuse by clergy or other Church personnel within our Diocese and throughout the Church and all those affected by its occurrence. May the Lord bring healing and peace.

Most Reverend Nicholas DiMarzio, Ph.D., D.D.
Bishop of Brooklyn
